Dalton School
Philadelphia, PA
Within the design I generated for the Dalton Plan School, there are three key elements. The first being the lower level community spaces that are designed to be used a multifunctional space for the entire neighborhood and not simply for the schools use. The cafeteria on the lower level is a large massive space that opens out to a “private” rested courtyard. The open platform above the soccer gym is elevated from the adjacent street level niche that allows for the two spaces to function independently from one another but still reside within the small circulation to each other. The educational spaces, the second component, are the home bases and study labs that reside on the upper second to fourth floor. Large windows carry across the full length of the lecture spaces of each home base, allowing the children to have a view of the outside environment, breaking the barrier between external spaces and interior isolation. The third component is the overall configuration of the design. The lower level and ground floor are heavy mass elements that ground the school to the side. The second for fourth floors are pieces off from one another to generate a puzzle effect and opening covered exterior spaces for each lower level for the students to work outside on their studies, but still be shielded from the hot sun and rain.
